History:
Unbound was created by Journalism and Graphic Design students and faculty from The College of New Jersey in 1996. This online news magazine gave students a chance to express their ideas and opinions on this platform. Sections included arts & leisure, opinions, lifestyles, health, features, and business & government. In 2006, Computer Science students working under the direction of Professor Pulimood created a content management system that housed the magazine’s contents from 1996-2008. Creating this online news source introduced Journalism students to computer technology, and allowed them to develop and utilize their computational skills in relation to Journalism.

Unbound was the longest running CAB-related project from TCNJ

History:
The Gumshoe project involved students from both the Computer Science and Journalism department at The College of New Jersey and a large metropolitan newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer. These students were charged with the task of creating a well-designed database system which would improve the data analysis process by removing the chances of data redundancy, and improving data accessibility, integrity and consistency, which also met journalistic needs. This database system was used to track data on the topic of violent gun crimes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Fun fact:
The idea of this project was to help make it easier for detectives to find suspects in Philidelphia through an easily accessible dataase.

History:
The Interactive Journalism Institute for Middle Schoolers gave young students from different backgrounds the opportunity to learn fundamental computer science concepts by serving as beat reporters, videographers, photographers and designers for an interactive online magazine. The program consisted of a week-long summer camp and an after-school program. One of the distinct features of the program is that the middle schoolers’ teachers collaborated with professors and students at The College of New Jersey to create opportunities for these middle school students to expand their computational and journalistic thinking.

This project was a very innovative approach to try to encourage computational and journalistic ideas in middle school curriculum.

History:
CAFÉ, which stands for Collaboration and Facilitation Environment, was created in response to the IJIMS (Interactive Journalism Institute for Middle Schoolers) project. This custom-designed content management system provided a secure publishing platform for IJIMS and preserved students’ anonymity.

CAFÉ was made in response to the success of IJIMS, and was made in order to save articles written from that project.

History:
The SOAP project, which stands for Students Organizing Against Pollution, was a part of the CABECT project. Journalism and Computer Science students were involved in SOAP. Students from both disciplines collaborated in order to provide more knowledge about brownfields for Trenton residents. Brownfields are areas which may be affected by environmental contamination. Using their computational thinking and problem solving skills, students collected and stored data, which members of the Trenton community were then able to easily access. Additionally, SOAP gave students the opportunity to recognize the importance of computational thinking in their Journalism classes.

SOAP has recently started to be developed on again after a buffer period of roughly 5-6 years

History:
Collaborating Across Boundaries to Engage Undergraduates in Computational Thinking used technology and computational skills to help solve-real world problems. Professors and students from both Journalism and Computer Science classes at The College of New Jersey implemented computational thinking into Journalism courses, which helped these students to broaden their computational knowledge and problem solving skills, and apply this to their own discipline. Courses which utilized the CABECT project’s model joined community organizations and helped with various problem solving processes.

CABECT is the old shell of CAB when the project used to e primarily focused around just computer science and journalism.

History:
Collaboration across disciplines gives students the opportunity to think critically, often in different ways than they are used to thinking in their core academic classes. Expanding computational learning tools and teaching computer knowledge to non-Computer Science students is beneficial, as it teaches these students different problem solving and solution making skills. The goal of Distributed Expertise was to implement this idea in non-CS classes and give these students the resources to gain computational thinking skills.
Fun fact:
This project was designed to bring computer science education into basic schooling during a time where that was very uncommon.
